Ward Mausoleum, Nottinghamshire

This small crenellated chapel projects from the north aisle of the church. It is pentagonal in shape with a plaster vault and five lancet windows, the heads of which contain some painted Georgian glass. The tall black monument which stands in the centre of the chapel is surmounted by a cross and bears a white marble plaque. The family coat of arms is emblazoned on the base. The chapel is separated from the space of the church by an iron railing.

History

Although the monument in the chapel is Victorian in date, the building itself is evidently earlier. The first generation of the family recorded on the monument is that of ‘James Ward, Gent’ (d.1798) and Mary, his wife, (d.1788) and the chapel may have been erected either when, or soon after, they died. It is possible there is a vault, now sealed, beneath the chapel. Inscriptions to later members of the family include those of their daughter, Hannah (d.1836) who had married Joseph Ridley, and their grandson, Joseph James Ridley (d.1857).

Condition

Good. Visited 2002.
