Wallace Mausoleum, Northumberland

Much of the chapel has fallen down, though the mausoleum is still largely intact. The most prominent feature of the complex is a tall hexagonal turret built at the angle between the chapel and anteroom adjoining the burial chamber. The anteroom is lit by a two-light traceried window and used to have memorial plaques on the walls.

History

The Hon Thomas Wallace rebuilt much of Featherstone Castle in the 1820s in a romanticised Gothic manner. It was built in 1828 following the death of Wallace’s wife, Lady Jane Hope.
