History

The mausoleum must have been built for the Reverend Sir John Head (d.1838) who married Jane Walker in 1801 as the shield over the entrance contains the arms of both their families. Their son, Sir Edmund Walker Head (1805-1868) who was Governor-General of Canada between 1854 and 1863, adopted the arms of Head Yorke after his marriage to Anne Maria Yorke in 1838. So whether or not the mausoleum was built prior to the death of Sir John Head, it was clearly intended for the interment of him and his wife.
