Vesey Mausoleum

A small Gothic mausoleum built in rubble with a stone slab roof. It has an arched entrance at one end flanked by pink granite colonettes, trefoil-headed windows in the side walls with similar granite shafts and a small rose window set above the plaque and inscription. The coat of arms and motto carved over the door is that of the Roscommon Veseys. Inside a pretty stained glass lantern is suspended from the roof.

History

Arthur Sidney Vesey (1856-1890) was one of the Roscommon Veseys of County Kildare. He was a Captain in the Norfolk Regiment militia and an Hon. Major in the Essex Regiment militia. He and his wife lived at Old House Farm prior to his death, at the age of 34, which occurred as a result of falling from his horse. Later his widow moved to “The Elms” (now “Scarletts”) next to the church. She is said to have gone to the mausoleum every day to read to her deceased husband. The second coffin in the building is believed to contain her remains.

Condition

Fair. Members of the parish are seeking funds to restore the building (August 2003).
