Vane Mausoleum

A rather dull Gothic Revival L-shaped chapel. Built in sandstone ashlar with a stone tiled roof, it stands in a railed enclosure attached to the north side of the churchyard.

History

Henry Vane, 2nd Duke of Cleveland (1789-1864) inherited Raby Castle in 1842 when he was 53 years old. The following year he employed William Burn to alter and extend the castle. This was carried out between 1843 and 1847. Then, in 1850, Burn provided the design for the family mausoleum on a piece of land bordering the churchyard at Staindrop.
