The Reverend Richard Valpy (1754-1836) a Classical scholar and poet, was headmaster of Reading School between 1781 and 1831. Despite being regarded as one of the heaviest floggers of his time, he inspired great affection in his pupils and is said to have been the model for Dr Strong in Dickens’ David Copperfield. The laudatory inscription on the mausoleum was composed by his former pupil, the dramatist and wit Sir Thomas Talfourd. The vault also contains his son, Abraham John Valpy (1787-1854) a publisher whose works included the reissue of the forty one volumes of the Delphin Classics.
