History

Mrs Emmeline Shawe-Storey (1841-1937) purchased the Greyladyes Estate in 1873, and she and her husband, Captain L P shawe-Storey, lived at Elm Lodge. After his death in 1905 Emmeline became a Roman Catholic and converted the ballroom in the house to the Chapel of Our Lady of the Rosary. She then built the mausoleum on land at the edge of the estate, surrounding it with a small cemetery. The intention was to transfer her husband's coffin from Sarisbury Green where it was buried to the mausoleum. But the coffin is said to have been too large to go through the door and, as a result, was buried in the cemetery instead. The widow joined her husband there in 1937.

Condition

A scheme for restoration was being worked out by the County Council in 1998. What has happened since?
