Sir Titus Salt (1803-76) was involved in the wool stapling business at Bradford. He increased the family fortunes by experimenting with wool imported from Russia, and discovering a new means of manufacturing alpaca. He is now best known however as the man who built the model village of Saltaire, thereby providing exemplary living conditions for his workmen and their families. The architects Lockward and Mawson drew up plans for the village in 1850. These included a Congregational Church, Methodist Church, public baths, wash houses, a library, schools, hospital, club and institute and public park. Salt was himself a Congregationalist, and the mausoleum he built for his family is attached to the north side of this church. In addition to his own remains, the vault contains those of seven other members of the family. The last interment was made in 1930.
