History

General Sir Loftus Otway (1774-1854) was a cavalry officer in the Peninsular Wars, defending Portugal against the Napoleonic forces. Though the general died in 1854 he wasn’t interred within the mausoleum until 1856 suggesting the structure was not complete until this date. The Otway line has now died out, but the last of his descendants bequeathed money to a children’s charity on condition that it would maintain the mausoleum.
