Lopes Mausoleum

A small chapel built in the Romanesque style, heavily buttressed at the corners, with ashlar walls and a stone tiled roof. Although there is a round-headed doorway of three orders at the east end, entrance to the vault in the basement is gained via steps on the south side of the building.

History

The mausoleum was built for George Lopes (1836-1909) and his wife Georgina (d.1912) who lived at Northleigh in Wiltshire. He was the fourth son of Sir Ralph Lopes and the younger brother of Henry Charles Lopes, 1st Baron Ludlow (see Ludlow mausoleum). As a young man he went into the army, later becoming a JP and Deputy Lieutenant for Wiltshire.

Condition

Good. The chapel is maintained by the Zoological Society to which the family left a large gift on condition of its upkeep. (July 2021)
