History

The Legertons lived in Shalford, but worshiped in the nonconformist church two miles away in Wethersfield. The church is dated 1822, and the mausoleum was evidently built soon after this as the earliest burial there was that of Mariann Legerton who died in 1829 aged fifteen years. She is commemorated by an oval plaque above the doorway (now bricked up) while the names and dates of death of other members of the family are inscribed on tablets to either side. The next burial was that of Isaac Legerton, who died in 1832 aged eighty four, and the last, John Stock Legerton of White Hall, Shalford, who died in 1885.

Condition

Good (2002).
