Kenrick Mausoleum

A Classical mausoleum, square on plan, with an octagonal dome surmounted by an urn. The inscription panels on each side, which are framed by Tuscan columns supporting arches, are now too weathered to be legible.

History

The mausoleum was built by Clayton Kenrick for his father, John Kenrick, and sister Elizabeth. The exact date of its construction is not known, but it was in existence by 1764 at which time Horace Walpole made a sketch of it. This drawing is included in the journal he wrote while making visits to country houses. The monument was restored in 1952.

Condition

In poor condition, choked by vegetation and higher order plantlife. Also failing render (2014).
