Robert William Kennard made his fortune by supplying the railways with iron and steel manufactured by the family works in Scotland and South Wales. He was Sheriff of London and Middlesex in 1846-7, and MP for Newport in the Isle of Wight in 1857 and from 1859-69. His connection with the railways led to his being made President of the Tournay and Joubise Railway Company, and Chairman of the Northern and Eastern Railway Company.
