History

Built by Theophilus Fairfax Johnson (1790-1853) in his garden at Holland House in the High Street. It was consecrated by the Bishop of Lincoln in 1843. When the house was sold following the death of his son Theophilus Maurice Stephen Johnson in 1892, it was first suggested that the mausoleum should be moved to the churchyard. But this proved impractical and, in 1894, it was agreed to re-erect it in the cemetery for use as a mortuary for bodies awaiting burial. A plaque was added stating that it was “for the use of the Poor and in memory of T. M. S. Johnson”.

Condition

The building is watertight and in overall good condition though some repair is needed to the stain glass windows and door leafs (2020).
