Garland Mausoleum

A large octagonal mausoleum with a flat roof and diagonally set pairs of columns at the four ‘corners’ of the building, constructed by the London Necropolis Company.  The plan form of this mausoleum, with its paired corner columns, has a long history.  The first design of this type appears to be the one published by William Chambers in A Treatise on Civil Architecture in 1759.  Later versions include of the famous Darnley mausoleum at Cobham in Kent (1784) and the Burns mausoleum at Dumfries in Scotland (1815).  Another early 20th century mausoleum of similar design is the one built for Lord Dalziel in Highgate Cemetery (1928).

History

Probably built by Charles Tuller Garland (1875-1921) who inherited a fortune from his father, James Albert Garland, who was Vice president of the First National Bank of New York. The son was a racehorse owner and millionaire who moved to England in the 1890s and lived at Moreton Hall in Warwickshire. When his mother, Anna Louise Garland, died in 1916 her body was placed in the mausoleum but then taken to New York two years later. His wife, Margaret, died in 1918 and he followed her three years later.

Condition

Fair. The walls still appear sound, but saplings are growing in the roof and cracks are beginning to open up in the stonework (2006).
