History

The mausoleum was built for Henrietta Anna, Countess of Carnarvon, in memory of her husband, Henry Herbert, the 3rd earl of Carnarvon (1800-49). It was he who, between 1839 and 1842, employed the architect Charles Barry to turn his plain Georgian house into the vast Jacobethan mansion it is today. The interiors of the house were not the work of Barry however; they were carried out by Thomas Allom who, some years later, also provided the design of the funerary chapel.
