Cantlon Mausoleum

An elaborately detailed Gothic mausoleum with gables to the front and sides, much blind tracery, and slender pinnacles bearing crosses at the four corners. It is possible that the roof was originally pyramidal in form rather than flat as at present. In the lunette over the door is a relief of Christ rising from the tomb, while the canted bay in the rear wall contains three stained glass windows, now boarded up. On the step, badly weathered but still just legible, is the name MATTHEW CANTLON ESQ.

Condition

2002: Poor. The building appears to have been vandalised and the roof is in need of urgent attention. Although the walls still look sound, there is moss and ivy on the stonework, and one of the gargoyles has a fern growing out its head (2002).

2018: Little change. Plants growing through the structure, ivy and moss coverage, etc. Based on photographs of this date by B Parsons.
