Barrington-White Mausoleum

The steeply pitched roof of this ‘stripped’ Gothic mausoleum almost reaches the ground. It is entirely built of white limestone and has bronze doors. The inscription beneath the Celtic cross at the apex of the gable reads: ‘BARRINGTON WHITE A1906D’.

History

James Barrington-White was born in County Armagh in 1856. He was a J.P., Commissioner of the Inland Revenue, landowner and keen sportsman who served for some years as an officer in the Hertfordshire Imperial Yeomanry Cavalry. He lived at Temple Dinsley just before the Georgian house was vastly extended by Edwin Lutyens for its next owner, Bertie Fenwick. The mausoleum is dated 1906.
