Heron Mausoleum (Co. Down)

Gable-fronted gothic revival mausoleum built c.1835.  Rectangular in plan with base plinth, roughly dressed limestone walls and ashlar dressings.  Pointed-arched doorway of receeding orders having cast-iron double-leaf doors.  Flanking pointed-arch inscription plaques with further ogee framed plaque above the central doorway.  Gabelts to barge course and apex of roof.

The inscription reads 'Erected by Robert Heron D.L., to the memory of his father Francis Heron, Ardigon House, who died 21st January 1816 aged 65 years and was interred in Killinchy churchyard, the ancient family burying ground.  Within this vault are interred the remains of the above named Robert Heron, D.L., Ardigon House, who died 16th September 1876 aged 84 years.  Also his son Robert Francis Garner Heron who died 1st June 1875.  William Cowan Heron J.P. of Altafort near Dromore, second son of the above named Francis Heron, who died 5th December 1836 aged 60 years.  James Heron of Tullyvery, fifth son of the said Francis Heron, who died 23rd March 1839 aged 54 years.  Margaret Heron, second daughter of the said James Heron who died 6th August 1854 aged 17 years.  Margaret Heron wife of the said James Heron, and youngest daughter of Samuel Cowan of Ballylintagh, who died 30th May 1868 aged 65 years.  Jane Heron, the beloved wife of said Francis Heron, and daughter of William Cowan of Larch Hill near Dromore who died 20th January 1841 aged 90 years.  Thomas Heron, eldest son of said Francis Heron, who died 28th September 1851 aged 76 years.  Jane Heron, fifth daughter of said Francis Heron who died 19th November 1871 aged 80 years.  Jane Cowan Alberta Butterworth Heron, daughter of James and Laetitia Heron of Tullyveery, died 11th June 1902 aged 20 years.  Margaret, eldest daughter of James and Laetitia Heron, Tullyveery House, born 29th May 1875, died 19th Dec. 1906 to the inexpressible sorrow of her parents and all who knew her.  James Heron, D.L., Tullyveery House, born 12th Nov. 1839, died 9th April 1924'.
